The Importance of Practicing Health & Wellness

Posted on 21/11/2021 Written by Steve Tee

As a part-time para athlete since 2015 and a full-time high performance athlete for the past 2 years, I’ve learned a lot from my coaches, trainers, sports nutritionist, sports physiotherapist and even sports psychologist. At the same time, I also did my own research and attained the Health & Wellness Coach certification. I’ve realised the importance of Health & Wellness and like to share more with you.

What is Health & Wellness?
Generally, Health & Wellness is an ongoing process and practice of keeping yourself mentally and physically well and healthy. Health & Wellness is important because regular exercise and proper nutrition can help to reduce the risks of a variety of conditions such as; overweight, cardiovascular disease, mental health issues and among other things.
By managing our nutrition and exercise well, we can achieve good health & wellness.
Health & Wellness is a wide topic. Aside from general emotional/mental and physical well-being, the National Wellness Institute promotes Six dimensions of Wellness: emotional/mental, occupational, physical, social, intellectual, and spiritual. All these are related to one another.

How I got into Health & Wellness and why is it important?
Back in 2020 last year, I was assigned to conduct a talk on Health & Wellness to a company. It was the first time I was exposed to this topic. After I did some research online, that’s where I got interested in the topic.
For the talk, I incorporated my story with Health & Wellness and they gel together well.
So I spoke on Occupational Wellness and highlighted that with wellness being practiced, employees’ morale, engagement and productivity will naturally improve. These will in turn promote better team work and higher job satisfaction.

Since then, my awareness for my overall well-being grew. As a full-time high performance athlete training for the Paralympic Games, I started to pay more attention to every aspect and things that will help to improve my recovery and performance.
One Example on Diet and Nutrition: I started to read or should I say hear and research more about diet and nutrition online. After knowing and learning, I took action to make a habit to start eating more healthy food. Together with all the advice and supplements my sports nutritionist provided me, I’m able to cope well with the intensive training load leading to the competition. Diet and nutrition will help your body to recover well in order for you to feel well and train well the next day. This action leads to routine and has become a habit. As such, my self-esteem and self-confidence also improved.

So, it is important for everyone to achieve optimal Health & Wellness. For now, remember my quote and saying,
“To achieve Health & Wellness, you need to Exercise Well, Eat Well, Social Well and Sleep Well.”
I will share with you more along the way, so stay tuned.
